Astronauts at heart of new IFRC campaign for world's first international disaster treaty
Countries: World, Belize, Fiji, Lebanon, Madagascar Source: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies International treaties protect astronauts in distress. But if a flood strikes your city, there is still no comprehensive global treaty to help countries cut through red tape and coordinate international assistance. New York/Geneva, 3 September 2026 – The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is today launching a new global campaign, Earth’s Missing Treaty, to highlight a stark reality: while international law protects astronauts in distress, there is no comprehensive international treaty setting out how countries should cooperate to protect people before, during and after disasters. The campaign highlights IFRC’s call for countries to support the adoption of the Treaty on the Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters, which UN Member States have agreed to negotiate and which would be the first comprehensive global treaty dedicated to protecting people before, during and after disasters. A global treaty would provide a common framework for international cooperation before disasters strike and when international assistanc…

Country: Democratic Republic of the Congo Sources: REACH Initiative, UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Please refer to the attached file.

Nepal’s catastrophic floods must be a wake-up call on climate action as death toll passes 1,000
Country: Nepal Source: Oxfam A week on, search and rescue operations and humanitarian aid efforts are a desperate race against time. Almost 4,000 people are missing, and some 50,000 people urgently need access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene. Nepal produces just 0.1 per cent of global emissions, yet communities are paying a devastating price as climate impacts and loss and damages escalate. The catastrophic floods in Nepal are a stark warning of what a hotter world will mean for communities on the climate frontline and why governments and donors must invest now in climate resilience, adaptation and disaster preparedness, rather than waiting for the next disaster to strike, Oxfam has warned. A week after the devastating floods, rescuers are still scrambling to reach people cut off by destroyed roads, bridges and landslides. Oxfam and local partners are racing to deliver life-saving assistance, but the scale of the destruction is making access to some of the worst-affected areas, particularly Rasuwa, increasingly difficult. Santosh Pandey, Oxfam in Nepal's Humanitarian and Disaster Risk Management Lead said “Nepal contributes just 0.1 per cent of global emissions, yet our comm…

More than one week on from Nepal's floods, thousands of children remain without safe water and face rising risk of disease
Country: Nepal Source: UN Children's Fund KATHMANDU, 3 September 2026 – More than one week after flash floods swept down the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river basin in Nepal, at least 22,000 children urgently need safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene support, UNICEF said today. Water supply systems have been damaged across the affected districts, from community schemes to larger networks, while sanitation facilities have been damaged and destroyed. At the same time, families are crowded into host households and holding centres, creating conditions that raise the risk of waterborne and infectious disease outbreaks. “Every parent in these districts is now making the same calculation several times a day,” said Alice Akunga, UNICEF Representative in Nepal. “Where can I get water, and is it safe to give to my child? When water systems and toilets have been damaged or destroyed, and dozens of people are sharing the same space, families face enormous challenges in maintaining safe hygiene. The risk of waterborne disease increases rapidly in these conditions, but it is preventable. That is why ensuring access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene is among our top priorities right now.” UNI…

Ciclone nelle Filippine e monsone di sud-ovest a Luzon - Operazione DREF (MDRPH060)
Paese: Philippines Fonte: International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Consultare il file allegato.
