Torches, not candles. Candles cause fires in exactly the circumstances where nobody can respond to one. One torch per person, spare batteries stored outside the device so they do not corrode in it.

A power bank, charged. An uncharged power bank is an object. Charge it on the first of the month, or whenever you do something else monthly.

A radio that runs on batteries or a handle. Mobile networks and home internet fail together; broadcast radio does not, and several national agencies recommend one for precisely this reason.

Head torches for anybody doing anything with their hands.

Never run a generator, barbecue or camping stove indoors, in a garage, or by an open window. Carbon monoxide is odourless and kills without warning, and it is the way power cuts most often become fatal.
